The family of Man / Jean Back
Le livre rassemble dès lors une multitude d’articles, écrits et critiques portant sur « The Family of Man ».Langues : Allemand Anglais Mots-clés : Jonas Verlag Jean Back Viktoria Schmidt-Linsenhoff Abigail Salomon-Godeau Marc-Emmanuel Mélon Eric Sandeen Timm Starl Allan Sekula Christian Caujolle Birgit Haehnel Andreas Haus Reinhard Matz Rosch Krieps The Family of Man Edward Steichen Wayne Miller Exposition Exposition photographique Exposition itinérante Photographie Histoire de la photographie Evolution de la photographie Photographie d’après-guerre Photographie humaniste Photographie postmoderne Essai Critique Analyse Ecrit Théorie Colloque Résumé : 4ème de couverture : "Edward Steichen’s photographic exhibition The family of Man, conceived in 1955 for the MoMA in New York, reached out beyond the fronts of the Cold War to an audience of millions who were fascinated by the utopian vision of a patriarchal family of man. In the early 1990s, long after it had taken its place as a closed chapter in history of photography in the post-war era, the exhibition was rediscovered and permanently housed in a museum in Clervaux (Luxembourg). The family of Man was much quoted by photographers, artists and curators, and its revival may be construed as symptomatic of the radical change in the relationship between photography and reality, aesthetics and politics in the 1990s.
The authors of this book offer a variety of new interpretations of the legendary photographic exhibition and the great acclaim with which itw as received between 1995 and 2001. Their articles establish surprising links and cross-references between the 1950s and the 1990s and touch upon a number of ostensibly unrelated fields of discourse – media and gender politics, psychoanalysis and photography, authorship and archive, the documentary and the aesthetic, Humanism and the Postmodern, traumatisation and the figurative."The family of Man : Humanism and Postmodernism : A reappraisal of the photo exhibition by Edward Steichen [texte imprimé] / Jean Back, Directeur de publication, rédacteur en chef ; Viktoria Schmidt-Linsenhoff (HG.), Directeur de publication, rédacteur en chef . - Allemagne : Jonas Verlag, 2004 . - 1 vol. Diana & Nikon / Janet Malcolm
Langues : Anglais Mots-clés : David R. Her essays – collected here for the first time and complete with reproductions of the works under discussion – explore the place of photography in the continuum of art. Her discussions of the works of pioneers Stieglitz, Steichen and Weston, innovators Avedon, Eggleston and Sonneman, and other major representatives of this new and vital art lead the reader to surprising and often unorthodox conclusions.
Malcolm’s central concern is how photography can be defined. What is its place in the hierarchy and the history of the arts ? If Malcolm’s answer is equivocal, it is because her view of photography is as complicated and controversial as the subject itself. Nonetheless, what she believes – whether about the portraits of Avedon, the snapshots of Winogrand, the nudes of Weston or the abstracts of Callahan – is emphatically clear and personal. This is a book to read and to ponder, a sensitive and generous appraisal of where photography is now in relation to all the arts as well as to its own past."Note de contenu : Preface (ix)

No other book and no other author have managed to relate the aesthetic evolution of the art of photography to its technical innovations with such an absorbing combination of clarity, scholarship, and enthusiasm. For this fifth edition of the book the text was completely revised and expanded, and well over half of the photographs were newly selected from collections on this country and abroad.
Using more than three hundred works by such master photographers as Talbot, Hill & Adamson, O’Sullivan, Cameron, Atget, Emerson, Stieglitz, Strand, Weston, Lange, Evans, Adams Brassaï, Cartier-Bresson, Callahan, Frank, and Arbus, the author presents a fascinating, comprehensive study of the significant trends and developments in the medium since the first photographs were made in 1939. And the fifth edition of The History of Photography includes photographs made in color, from hand-tinted daguerreotypes of 1850 to turn-of-the-century autochromes by Steichen to works by such contemporary masters as Eliot Porter, Ernst Haas, William Eggleston, Stephen Shore, and Joel Meyerowitz.

The Picture History of Photography / Peter Pollack
Titre : The Picture History of Photography : From the Earliest Beginnings to the Present Day Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Peter Pollack, Auteur Editeur : Londres : Thames & Hudson Année de publication : 1977 Importance : 1 vol. (176 p.) Présentation : 238 ill. en noir et blanc / 18 ill. en couleurs Format : 22 x 29,2 cm Accompagnement : 0 500 27101 1 Note générale : Beau-livre ; Histoire de la photographie. Langues : Anglais Mots-clés : Thames and Hudson Peter Pollack Beau-livre Photographie Histoire de la photographie Art de la photographie Evolution de la photographie Vocabulaire photographique Technique photographique Sciences Photographie moderne Photojournalisme Portrait Paysage Architecture Scène de vie Mise en scène Abstraction Henry Fox Talbot Nicéphore Niepce Louis Daguerre David Octavius Hill Robert Adamson Alexander Hesler Nadar Julia Margaret Cameron Oscar Gustave Rejlander Henry Peach Robinson Mathew Brady Eadweard Muybridge Thomas Eakins Alfred Stieglitz Edward Steichen Eugène Atget Jacques Henri Lartigue Lewis Hine Arnold Genthe Edward Weston Ansel Adams Roy Stryker Jacob Riis Erich Salomon Margaret Bourke-White Alfred Eisenstaedt Robert Doisneau David Douglas Duncan Brassaï Harry Callahan Aaron Siskind Andreas Feininger Henri Cartier-Bresson Ed Van der Elsken Yousuf Karsh Robert Capa Bill Brandt William Eugene Smith David Seymour Arnold Newman Lucien Clergue Gordon Parks Bruce Davidson Résumé : Couverture : "It is with photography as an art and with photographers as artists that this lavishly illustratd book is concerned. Tracing the history of photography from man’s first discovery of chemical reaction to light, Peter Pollack follows every important development from the daguerrotypes of Daguerre and paper negative prints of Fox Talbot to the finegrained images of the present day.
All aspects of photography are included, presenting its tremendous power as a means of expression and communication : portraiture, journalism, the documentary, landscapes, science, abstraction, and colour. Lively, informative profiles introduce the works of such individual masters as Niepce, Hill and Adamson, Hesler, Nadar, Julia Margaret Cameron, Stieglitz, Steichen, Brassaï, Cartier-Bresson, Karsh, Gordon Parks, Bruce Davidson and many, many more.
There are fantasies and curiosities that show how photographers enlarged the scope of their medium ; stills that preserve the look and atmosphere of the pre-atomic world – its costumes, manners, houses, and scenes of daily life ; « shots » that extend the range of human vision to include the impossibly small and the impossibly far away. And the interspersed throughout is a veritable portrait gallery of memorable personalities.
Here is a collection of photographic masterpieces that represents the contribution of our own era to creative expression in the world. It will surprise and enlighten those who have regarded photography only as a factual recording device, and will reveal the limitless potential of photography as an art medium, not only through the perceptive and comprehensive text, but through the pictures themselves."Note de contenu : Author's Preface (p.7)
