Diana & Nikon / Janet Malcolm
Langues : Anglais Mots-clés : David R. Her essays – collected here for the first time and complete with reproductions of the works under discussion – explore the place of photography in the continuum of art. Her discussions of the works of pioneers Stieglitz, Steichen and Weston, innovators Avedon, Eggleston and Sonneman, and other major representatives of this new and vital art lead the reader to surprising and often unorthodox conclusions.
Malcolm’s central concern is how photography can be defined. What is its place in the hierarchy and the history of the arts ? If Malcolm’s answer is equivocal, it is because her view of photography is as complicated and controversial as the subject itself. Nonetheless, what she believes – whether about the portraits of Avedon, the snapshots of Winogrand, the nudes of Weston or the abstracts of Callahan – is emphatically clear and personal. This is a book to read and to ponder, a sensitive and generous appraisal of where photography is now in relation to all the arts as well as to its own past."Note de contenu : Preface (ix)

Photography : Essays & Images / Beaumont Newhall
Titre : Photography : Essays & Images : Illustrated Readings in the History of Photography Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Beaumont Newhall, Editeur commercial Editeur : New York : The Museum of Modern Art Année de publication : 1980 Importance : 1 vol. (328 p.) Présentation : 190 ill. en noir et blanc Format : 20,9 x 28,7 cm Accompagnement : ISBN : 0-87070-387-0 Note générale : Beau-livre ; Histoire de la photographie. Beaumont Newhall calls this book « an autobiography of the art of photography, written by some of the men and women who by their inventive genius, their scientific skill, and their artistic sensibility have forged a technique into a vital visual medium. We have allowed them to speak to us directly, without condensing, excerpting, or otherwise editing their words, so that the volume may be both an authentic source book for students of the history of photography as an art and a narrative for the general reader. »
Mr. Newhall has chosen 190 photographs to illustrate the reports, critiscism, and points of view expressed by the writers of the « autobiography », many from the photographic archive of The Museum of Modern Art, others from collections throughout the world. He also provides brief introductory comments to place each selection in historical context. Photographs and text are carefully integrated.
The selections in this volume include first-person accounts of the inventions of the basic photographic techniques ; newspaper reports of the discovery of the daguerreotype and of the early photographic exhibitions ; criticism by Baudelaire, Léger, Moholy-Nagy ; personal statements by Stieglitz, Steichen, Strand, Lange, Adams, Weston, Evans, and others. This basic source material, presented at length and accompanied by relevant photographs, provides a rich background for the chronological history of the medium so masterfully presented by Mr. Newhall in his classic work, The History of Photography."Photography : Essays & Images : Illustrated Readings in the History of Photography [texte imprimé] / Beaumont Newhall, Editeur commercial . - New York : The Museum of Modern Art, 1980 . - 1 vol. An introduction by English master photographer Cecil Beaton, discussing the history and trends of photography, precedes the series of entries devoted to over 200 individual artists. Each entry constists of a key photograph, a comprehensive section of biographical and technical details written by Gail Buckland, Curator of the Royal Photographic Society Collection, and a personal assessment by Beaton of the photographer’s contribution to this art. Major artists are further represented by a selection of photographs which are characteristic of their work. A complete glossary of photographic processes and terminology is also included.
A delightful book for browsing as well as a valuable reference work, The Magic Image offers a superb overview of photography’s past and the artists who have distinguished it."The Magic Image : The genius of photography from 1839 to the present day [texte imprimé] / Cecil Beaton, Auteur ; Gail Buckland, Auteur . - Toronto (Canada) : Little, Brown & Company, 1975 .
A delightful book for browsing as well as a valuable reference work, The Magic Image offers a superb overview of photography’s past and the artists who have distinguished it."Réservation
