Here were landscapes breathing atmosphere and light, mysterious allegorical figure studies, picturesque genre studies and true portraits which put life and character into their subjects. Alfred Stieglitz, who put the show together, entitled it "American Pictorial Photography, arranged by « The Photo-Secession »". It was the first large-scale manifestation of photographs as a fine art seen in New York, and it gave birth to the new revolutionary movement in American photography.
The text and the 91 superb illustrations in this book describe the background, the origin, and the work of the Photo-Secession, and the relation of this extraordinary movement to the history of photography and modern art. For this edition, the section devoted to the work of the Photo-Secessionists has been greatly expanded. The book now contains some of the finest and most famous photographs by such artists as Stieglitz (« The Flatiron-Evening », « The Steerage », « The City of Ambition », etc.), Steichen (his portraits of Rodin, of Rodin’s Balzac, of J. Pierpont Morgan, Esq.), Joseph T. Keiley, George H. Seeley, Clarence H. White (« Winter Landscape », « The Orchard »), Gertrude Käsebier, Frank Eugene (his portrait of Alfred Stieglitz, « Adam and Eve »), J. Craig Annan, Alvin Langdon Coburn (portrait of Bernard Shaw, « Notre Dame », « The Bridge, Venice »), Heinrich Kühn, Adolf De Meyer, Paul Strand (his studies of New York), and many others.
Founded in 1902 by Stieglitz, Photo-Secession exhibited the work of its members throughout the world, published Camera Work (from 1903 to 1917), certainly the most influential artistic periodical of its time, and opened the « 291 » gallery on Fifth Avenue. « 291 » exhibited the work of American and European photographers, painters and sculptors. Robert Doty, formerly on the staff of the George Eastman House, traces the evolution of this group, the importance of Alfred Stieglitz to this movement, and its connections not only to photography, but to the broad stream of art. Stieglitz, Eduard Steichen and the other members of the Photo-Secession accomplished more than a recognition of photography as a distinctive medium of individual and artistic expression. They created a revolution. This book shows you the revolution and explains its meaning and importance.

Photography : Essays & Images / Beaumont Newhall
Titre : Photography : Essays & Images : Illustrated Readings in the History of Photography Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Beaumont Newhall, Editeur commercial Editeur : New York : The Museum of Modern Art Année de publication : 1980 Importance : 1 vol. (328 p.) Présentation : 190 ill. en noir et blanc Format : 20,9 x 28,7 cm Accompagnement : ISBN : 0-87070-387-0 Note générale : Beau-livre ; Histoire de la photographie. Beaumont Newhall calls this book « an autobiography of the art of photography, written by some of the men and women who by their inventive genius, their scientific skill, and their artistic sensibility have forged a technique into a vital visual medium. We have allowed them to speak to us directly, without condensing, excerpting, or otherwise editing their words, so that the volume may be both an authentic source book for students of the history of photography as an art and a narrative for the general reader. »
Mr. Newhall has chosen 190 photographs to illustrate the reports, critiscism, and points of view expressed by the writers of the « autobiography », many from the photographic archive of The Museum of Modern Art, others from collections throughout the world. He also provides brief introductory comments to place each selection in historical context. Photographs and text are carefully integrated.
The selections in this volume include first-person accounts of the inventions of the basic photographic techniques ; newspaper reports of the discovery of the daguerreotype and of the early photographic exhibitions ; criticism by Baudelaire, Léger, Moholy-Nagy ; personal statements by Stieglitz, Steichen, Strand, Lange, Adams, Weston, Evans, and others. This basic source material, presented at length and accompanied by relevant photographs, provides a rich background for the chronological history of the medium so masterfully presented by Mr. Newhall in his classic work, The History of Photography."Photography : Essays & Images : Illustrated Readings in the History of Photography [texte imprimé] / Beaumont Newhall, Editeur commercial . - New York : The Museum of Modern Art, 1980 . - 1 vol. No other book and no other author have managed to relate the aesthetic evolution of the art of photography to its technical innovations with such an absorbing combination of clarity, scholarship, and enthusiasm. For this fifth edition of the book the text was completely revised and expanded, and well over half of the photographs were newly selected from collections on this country and abroad.
Using more than three hundred works by such master photographers as Talbot, Hill & Adamson, O’Sullivan, Cameron, Atget, Emerson, Stieglitz, Strand, Weston, Lange, Evans, Adams Brassaï, Cartier-Bresson, Callahan, Frank, and Arbus, the author presents a fascinating, comprehensive study of the significant trends and developments in the medium since the first photographs were made in 1939. And the fifth edition of The History of Photography includes photographs made in color, from hand-tinted daguerreotypes of 1850 to turn-of-the-century autochromes by Steichen to works by such contemporary masters as Eliot Porter, Ernst Haas, William Eggleston, Stephen Shore, and Joel Meyerowitz.
The fifth edition of this internationally acclaimed book has been translated into five languages."Note de contenu : Préface 7
